Sega di Ala
This epically hard climb was introduced as a stage of the Giro del Trentino 2013. With average slope of 9%, peaks of 20% and 21 hairpins that seem to never end, it is now also known for an episode where Bradley Wiggins threw away his bike due to mechanical problems.
The route starts by following the Adige river valley on its left bank towards Trento, arriving in Sdruzzina, near Ala. Looking up, we immediately see what awaits us in a few kilometers: The Sega di Ala should be treated with "respect" otherwise you too may end up throwing your bike! For the first 6 km, the average slope is 10% (14-16% in some places), on which a series of leg-breaking switchbacks brings us quickly to over 1000 meters above sea level, from where you can enjoy a broad overview of the Val d'Adige. After passing through a tunnel, we are welcomed by an unexpected respite as the road relents for nearly 500 m. Unfortunately, though, the next 3 km are even more terrible yet, with an average slope of 11.5% and peaks of 20%. At the end of this long slog we cross Sega di Ala (1220 m), from which we then pass through green pastures on our return to Veneto, where we arrive without more difficulties to Passo delle Fittanze (1399 mt). We ride a few kilometers on the plateau of the Lessinia mountains before a descent into the valley of the Adige and the last few flat kilometers.
