Passo Fedaia (with Serrai of Sottoguda canyon) (Restyling 2017)
In this videorace walk along the side of Caprile to reach the 2057 meters in Passo Fedaia, the cycling world generically called "Marmolada", named after the overlying massive (3342m), where the glacier is the largest of Dolomiti. The road quickly narrow but spectacular, since slips in Serrai, throat unique. Enjoy the passage in the throat, already entering the climb begins to be felt, but in the exitgradients start to get serious.
Crossed the River Roost, at 1.4 km to reach Malga Ciapela, where the road rejoins the main road of Serrai. We are the most important tourist resort in the valley: from here depart the lifts direct to the summit of the Marmolada, there are trails for 22 km, including the "Belluno", considered one of the most beautiful in the Alps.
Start now on the side "bad" of the climb, one that has made famuous this ascent: 11 - 12% to reach Baita Dovich and Capanna Bill. What makes this difficult stretch is not only the slope but also the absolute lack of curves: between Malga Ciapela and Capanna Bill (starting point of a chairlift directly to Passo Padon) there is an endless straight line, where, among the 'another, it touches the maximum slope, reached just before reaching the Capanna Bill. After the Capanna Bill, the road suddenly changes direction and type, winding climb to the Fedaia. Do not change, however, the slopes, which remain high until the summit.
The SERRAI of SOTTOGUDA
traveled by river Pettorina, the gorge of Serrai is characterized by high walls up to 60 meters and a few meters away from each other (between eight and ten meters wide). The narrowness of the path have given rise to many legends, like that of King Ombro tells you lived in the gorge, protected by gates solid gold gates, seats to access the gorge. The presence of "real" man is testified by a number of holes on the rock, drilled to attach the logs of larch, installed in the spring to build the bridges of the road that was used to bring the cattle to pasture or to bring the hay home. When season was over, bridges had to be dismantled to give free rein to the full of water of the river Pettorina, would have swept away all them in the narrow passage through the throat. The current route of the road is not the original one, but a track put in place during the First World War: witness the two galleries used as ammunition and a chapel (in memory of the military cemetery of Malga Ciapela). Along the old route, now abandoned, you can see an effigy of the Sacred Heart: carved into the rock in one of the closest points of the throat, he intended to warn and bless the travelers, in times when passing through the Serrai was very dangerous.
Today the gorge was declared a Nature Reserve and, for this reason, this road is prohibited to drive (there is a chance to get to the parking lot at the beginning of the throat). In winter it attracts ice climbers: this activity is possible because the numerous waterfalls that descend from the top of the throat and freeze covered with a thick blue mantle rocks, constituting one of the most attractive and varied ice walls of Europe.
