The climb to Passo del Rombo is one of the most rewarding of South Tyrol, for the evocative and majestic alpine environment, and for the length of the rise: over 29 km at 6.2% with 12% steep. Surely it can be compared to the Stelvio as hardness and beautiful vistas, but does not enjoy the same epic aura.
From San Martino we travel the Val Passiria to the village of San Leonardo, where the climb begins. The first 15 km there are quite discontinuous with a succession of steep tears alternated with milder strokes, then the road becomes easy for 4 km, giving us a valuable recovery. A bend to the left (source of ferruginous water on the right) finally introduces us last challenging part of 8 km, with gradients often in excess of 10%, which terminates at the mouth of a long and dark tunnel. The last 2 km that separate us from the pass flow away quickly without any difficulty. We enter in Austria. Steep descent before tackling the last kilometers of the climb to Hochgurgl.

Of all the long climbs I own as a RLV, this is one of my favourite ones. It starts with a minor gradient, so the 'real' climb starts at about km 7. The following 26 km of climbing are very demanding. Despite the intermediate less steep section, it's always a big relief, when you reach the top of the Passo Rombo. Add 'Descending Timmelsjoch' in order enjoy this beautiful landscape again and in a more relaxed way. Excellent video quality.
